What is an advance healthcare directive?

An advance healthcare directive is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken for their health if they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves because of illness or incapacity.  Essentially, it protects your right to refuse medical treatment you do not want, or to request treatment you do want, in the event you lose the ability to make decisions yourself.

In California, when you are admitted to a hospital, the hospital usually provides a form for you. However, it is not written specifically to your specific needs and does not contain your specific directions.

When we prepare a living trust for you, we include an advance healthcare directive tailored to your needs and wants, at no additional cost.
